John W. Pfaff

South Bend - Former Appellate Court Judge John Pfaff, 76, of Eagle Lake, Edwardsburg, a former South Bend resident, died Sunday morning in Elkhart General Hospital after an extended illness. Pfaff was born Feb. 26, 1901 in Marietta, Ohio, and graduated from Hanover (Ind.) College in 1926. He graduated from the former Indianapolis Law School and was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1929. He then began practicing law in South Bend and took leave from his law firm, Pfaff, Ettl and Mills, here when he was elected judge of the Appellate Court in 1954. Before joining the court, Pfaff also served as an assistant to the Indiana Superior Court and on the staff of the U.S. district attorney.

 

He had been a member of the Scottish Rite, Murial Temple Shrine, the Kiwanas Club, Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, and was active in the Community Chest, Red Cross and Boy Scout organizations.

 

He is survived by his wife Odessa W., whom he married in 1926 in South Bend; two sons, John W. Jr. of Fairfax, Va. And Robert A. of Elkhart, and eight grandchildren.

 

Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Paul F. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg, where services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Internment will be in Adamsville Cemetery, Adamsville, Mich. The family has requested that memorial contributions be made to any charity.
