Oct. 29, 1941 - July 18, 2002 Mary Elizabeth (Grabe) Podemski, 60, of Esther Avenue, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away Thursday, July 18, after her long-term battle with cancer.
Mary was born on Oct. 29, 1941, in Sturgis, Mich., as the daughter of Louis and Elizabeth Johnsonbaugh. Mary was preceded in death by her father, Louis. On Sept. 23, 1991, as Mary Grabe, she married Walter Podemski, who survives. Mary is also survived by her mother, Elizabeth Johnsonbaugh of Sturgis; three daughters, Linda (Kevin) Kelley of Sturgis, Kristen (Phil) Velie of Sturgis and Brenda (Patrick) McCullough of Granger, Ind; two sons, Michael (Carmen) Grabe of Sturgis and Dale (Gina) Grabe of Mishawaka; eight grandchildren, Craig and Nathan Grabe, Zachary and Ashley Kelley, Briann and Nicholas Velie, all of Sturgis, Alexis and Cole Grabe of Mishawaka; and by two brothers, Edward (Julie) Johnsonbaugh of Laingsburg, Mich., and John (Vickie) Johnsonbaugh of Three Rivers, Mich. Mary worked as a nurse for Tanglewood Trace. She donated her body to science. She was a graduate of Sturgis High School in 1959. She then graduated from Glenn Oaks Community College with a nursing degree in 1974. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where visitation will take place one hour prior. Donations may be made in memory of Mary to Hospice of St. Joseph County, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437.
