Hendle Davidson Polis

SOUTH BEND - Hendle Davidson Polis, 109, of Regency Place, died at 1:20 a.m. Sunday in the nursing home. Mrs. Polis was born July 12, 1884, in Chernigov, Russia. She immigrated to the United States in 1906, moving to Milwaukee.

 

On July 3, 1910, in Chicago, she married Harry Polis. He died March 18, 1968. She is survived by two sons, Morris of South Bend and Ben of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, including Francie Rosen of South Bend; and nine great-grandchildren. One child is deceased. She was a member of the former Mishawaka Synagogue and William Street Shul, Jewish Senior Citizens, B'nai B'rith, and Hadassah. The late Golda Meir, who later was prime minister of Israel, came to South Bend in the late 1930s to help Mrs. Polis establish the local chapter of Pioneer Women.

 

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the chapel of Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka. Burial will follow. There will be no visitation. Forest G. Hay Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Sinai Synagogue, Hadassah, or B'nai B'rith.
