Edmund Poplawski

Edmund Poplawski, 78, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2005, in his home. Edmund was born on January 1, 1927, in Rochmanon, Poland, to Joseph and Veronica (Kaszubinski) Poplawski. When he was a young man he worked as forced labor on a farm run by German owners. Edmund immigrated to the United States on January 21, 1951, via an army transport ship. He then worked in Connecticut on tobacco farms and eventually moved to New York City. When the rest of his family came to Ohio, Edmund moved to Tiffin, Ohio. While living in Ohio, he became a U.S. citizen, and was then drafted by the United States Army. He served during the Korean War from 1952 until 1954.

 

On April 18, 1959, in St. Joseph's Church in Tiffin, Ohio, he married Alice G. Buchman. In 1963 he moved to South Bend, Indiana, and was hired by the Bendix Corporation, where he worked in the design department for 22 years, retiring in January 1992. Survivors include his wife, Alice G. Poplawski of South Bend, Indiana; four sisters, Elizabeth (Robert) Tonkel, Bernice Czubachowski, Anna (Alex) Wasylkowski and Sophie Mikolajczyk, all of Toledo, Ohio; four nieces and three nephews; and his two dogs, Bobo and Lulu.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Edmund was a member of Christ the King Parish and the American Legion Post #297. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Joseph County Humane Society.
