John W. Porte

April 16, 1915 - March 14, 1998

SOUTH BEND - John W. Porte, 82, of South Bend, Ind., died at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, in Memorial Hospital.

He was born on April 16, 1915, in Brighton, Ind., to the Rev. Robert F. and Grace Guthrie Porte.

Mr. Porte was a graduate of Riley High School, attended Ashland University, Ashland, Ohio, and graduated from the Indiana School of Mortuary Science. He joined the South Bend Police Department in 1939, retiring in 1959 as the chief of the detective bureau. From 1959 until 1967 Mr. Porte served as executive coordinator for the Brethren Church in Ashland, Ohio. Returning to South Bend in 1967, Mr. Porte worked in the St. Joseph County Adult Probation Office, retiring as chief probation officer in 1983.

On Jan. 8, 1938, he married Eleanor Sholly, who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Carol (Louis) Groner of Dallas, Texas, and Janet M. Porte of Greendale, Wis.; two sons, John W. (Geanie) Porte, Jr., of Kansas City, Mo., and Phillip (Lorraine) Porte of San Francisco, Calif.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and by a sister-in-law, Lorraine Porte of Erie, Pa.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Homer.

Mr. Porte was a lifelong member and deacon of the First Brethren Church of South Bend, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 36.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to the American Cancer Society.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the First Brethren Church, 4909 S. Ironwood. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery.
