Joseph C. Portolese

June 16, 1925 - March 14, 1998

Joseph C. Portolese, 72, of West 8th Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away suddenly at 12:28 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, at home.

Mr. Portolese was born on June 16, 1925, in Mishawaka.

On Sept. 27, 1947, in St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Mishawaka, he married Elizabeth M. Paridaen. Mr. and Mrs. Portolese enjoyed a fun and memorable celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary this past September with family and friends in Las Vegas. Mrs. Portolese survives.

He is also survived by three sons, Ron (Marilyn) Portolese of South Bend, Ind., Michael (Cynthia) Portolese and Larry (Susan) Portolese, both of Granger, Ind.; five grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Lyndsey, Nicholas and Alex Portolese; two sisters, Margaret Perkins and Mary J. Portolese, both of Mishawaka; and by three brothers, Ross (Mary Rose) Portolese, Frank (Cathy) Portolese and Don (Shirley) Portolese, all of Mishawaka.

Joe retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1986 after 34 years of service. During 25 of those years, he also owned a professional photography studio and had the pleasure of recording the lives of many families from their children's first Communions to their wedding days.

Joe had many loves including golf and Notre Dame football, but his first love was his family of which he was very proud. He will always be remembered as a devoted husband and father.

He was also a member of the Diloreto Club and the B-K Clubs in Mishawaka.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. James Shafer officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, with a Rosary to be recited at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home.
