Rev. Maurice E. Powers CSC, 80, of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died there Sunday after an illness. He was born Nov. 5, 1905 in Oxford, Iowa. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame with burial in Community Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Moreau Seminary, where a wake service will he held at 7:30 p.m.

 

Rev. Powers entered the Congregation of Holy Cross, Notre Dame in 1927 after a year of college at Creighton University, Omaha. He made his first vows on July 2, 1929 and final profession on July 2, 1932. After theological studies at Holy Cross College, Washington DC, he was ordained to the prieshood on June 24, 1937 at Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. He taught at Holy Cross College and preached at Holy Cross Mission Bands, Notre Dame and North Eaton, Mass. From 1943 to 1954

He was chaplain in the armed services. He served in Europe and the Pacific during World War II. From 1954 to 1965 he assisted at Sacred Heart Parish in New Orleans, La.; St. Patrick’s Parish, South Bend; St. Ann’s Cathedral, Austin, Texas; St. Bernard’s Parish, Watertown, Mass.; and Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame. He retired to Holy Cross House in 1965.
