Sister Mary Eva Purcell CSC

Sister Mary Eva CSC, of the Sisters of Holy Cross died in Saint Mary’s Convent at noon Tuesday following a prolonged illness. She was born Hortense Louise Purcell in 1883 in Memphis, Tenn. Educated in Tennessee, she entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1903; receiving the habit in 1904; and making her final vows in 1909. During her community life, she taught at Lancaster, Pa.; Washington DC; Woodstock, Ill.; Park City, Utah; Fairbury, Neb.; Fort Wayne. Most of her teaching career was spent at St. Mary’s Academy and St. Joseph Grade School, both in South Bend.

 

A requiem high mass will be held in the Church of Loretto at St. Mary’s College at 6 a.m. Thursday with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemery on the campus. Friends may call at the convent parlor.
