Arthur Joseph Quigley Sr.

Arthur J. Quigley, 86, an associate professor of electrical engineering at the University of Notre Dame, died on Monday, Dec. 11, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Mr. Quigley was born on Nov. 25, 1914, in Boston, Mass., to the late William F. and Mary F. (Carroll) Quigley. He was preceded in death by three brothers, four nephews, and by his son, A. Joseph Jr.

 

He graduated from Boston Latin School in 1932, Northeastern University, Boston, with a B.S. in electrical engineering, magna cum laude in 1937, Harvard University, M.S., communication engineering, 1939, University of Notre Dame, doctoral degree, ABD, physics, 1942. Mr. Quigley joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department in 1942, and continued to teach at the University of Notre Dame for 54 years. During World War II he taught engineering classes in Notre Dame's three-semester programs for Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force members.

 

Art was an active member of Saint Joseph Parish, South Bend, participating in Troop 505, Boy Scouts, Explorer Scouts, girls Camp Fire Program, chairman of several committees including social justice and liturgy, Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) and PTA. He was also active in scouting for 40 years, and was the holder of the Eagle, Silver Beaver and St. George Awards. He was the recipient of the Knights of Columbus Man of the Year Award 1967, the Pope Pius Award 1968, and was active in the Christian Family Movement. Art was president of the Northeast Neighborhood Council for over 20 years, working with others to maintain and develop the northeast area. He was on the board of REAL Services, and received the Center City Association Downtown Recognition Award and the Hometown Heroes Award. He also received the Reinhold Niebuhr Award from the University of Notre Dame.

 

On March 25, 1940, he married Arlene F. Rose in Boston. They have resided in South Bend since April 1940. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; his daughters, Kathleen and David Sullivan of Winterset, Iowa, Patricia Q. Bodnar of Dayton, Ohio, and Mary Q and Ted Price of Grapevine, Texas; nine grandchildren, four grands-in-law and one great-granddaughter, June R. Hunsicker of Morgan Hills, Calif.; a sister-in-law; and loving nieces and nephews, and families in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and California. Because of his long association with people, Arthur was a unique person with a special depth of character. We will miss him greatly.

 

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church, corner of Hill and LaSalle, South Bend. Cremation will follow later. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today in the McGann Funeral Homes, University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison, South Bend. There will be a Rosary at 3:30 p.m., and a wake service at 6:30 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Boy Scouts, Northeast Neighborhood Center, to The Arthur J. Quigley Scholarship in Electrical Engineering at Notre Dame, or to the charity of donor's choice.
