ART GALLERY CO-FOUNDER DEAD AT 74

 

Roman J. Radecki

February 20, 1914December 27, 1988

 

Roman J. Radecki, 74, co-founder of Radecki Art Gallery, died at 4:20pm Tuesday in St Joseph’s Medical Center.

 

Mr. Radecki, of 113 S. St Peter St., retired from the art gallery in 1976.  The art shop, originally located at 529 Lincoln Way West, was opened in 1958.  The gallery moved to 721 E. Jefferson Blvd., in 1964.

 

Mr. Radecki’s interest in art began in grade school when a teacher told him he should develop his art talent.  He later took classes at Indiana University at South Bend and the South Bend Art Center. His work won several awards from the Art Center and the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

 

Mr. Radecki was a former employee of the Studebaker Corp.  He left Studebaker in 1962 to concentrate on the gallery and picture framing work.

 

Mr. Radecki was born February 20, 1914, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident.  On May 20, 1941, in South Bend, he married Adell Michalski, who survives.  Also surviving are tow daughters, Monica M. Radecki of South Bend and Allana J. Radecki of Bloomington IN; three sons, Michael R. of Greenville SC, Ronald P. of South Bend and Martin J. of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; and two sisters, Sabina Paczkowski and Harriet Pajakowski, both of South Bend.

 

Mr. Radecki was a member of St. Hedwig Catholic Church.  He was a veteran of World War II.

 

Services will be at 11am Friday in St. Hedwig Catholic Church.  Burial will be in St Joseph Cemetery.

 

Friends may call form 2 to 5 and 7 to 9pm Thursday in St Joseph Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 4pm.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church building fund.
