Marie Johanna Rayl, 72, of South Bend, Ind., died at 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, following a lengthy illness. Mrs. Rayl was born March 16, 1930, in South Bend, to the late Peter and Joanna J. (Kwist) Van Es, and was a lifetime area resident.

On March 17, 1951, in South Bend, as Marie J. Van Es, she married Robert K. Rayl, who preceded her in death Sept. 8, 1995. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John, Anthony and Peter Van Es. She is survived by four daughters, Catherine (Edward) Stachowicz of Lafayette, Ind., Joyce M. Rayl of South Bend, Loretta (William) Wogatzke of Mottsville, N.C., and Cory (Christopher Guldberg) Rayl of Chicago, Ill.; six sons, Robert K. (Toni) Rayl Jr., Jack A. (Lisa) Rayl and Brayan R. (Lori) Rayl, all of Mishawaka, Ind., Steven M. (Linda) Rayl of Columbia City, Ind., and Peter J. (Amy) Rayl and Jonathan P. (Sheila) Rayl of South Bend; 24 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marianne Wright of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Cornelia Butler of El Cajon, Calif.; two brothers, Richard (Barbara) Van Es of South Bend and Paul (Elsie) Van Es of Central Point, Ore.; and by a brother-in-law, Richard W. Rayl of Mishawaka.

Mrs. Rayl retired in 1996 from St. Mary's Convent as the head dietician after 26 years service. She was a member of the New Apostolic Church, South Bend, and was a support grandparent for the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the New Apostolic Church, with Mr. Peter Bell and Mr. Michael Caffery officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 27, in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street.
