Sister Mary Elaine Reilly CSC

Sister Mary Elaine CSC, of the Sisters of the Holy Cross died early today in Saint Mary’s Convent, where she retired to last year because on failing health. She was born Elizabeth Reilly in 1888 in Mt. Olive, Ill., receiving her early education there. She was a public school teacher in Mt. Olive when she entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1914. She received her habit that year and made her profession of vows in 1916. During her community life she was assigned to St. Patrick’s Academy in Washington DC; and from 1930 to 1932 she taught at St. Joseph Grade School in South Bend. In 1932 she returned to Washington as principal of Blessed Sacrament School. She was superior and principal superior of St. Peter’s School in Washington from 1936 to 1942. She was a member of the Provincial Council of the Eastern Province from 1941 to 1951. Before her retirement she served at the Academy of Holy Cross and Dunbarton College, both in Washington DC.

 

A requiem high mass will be offered at 6 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto at St. Mary’s College, with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call at the convent parlor.
