Jack D. Rhodes Sr.

MISHAWAKA - Jack D. Rhodes Sr., 85, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away November 5, 2008 at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. Jack was born November 21, 1922 in Florence, Alabama to the late Norman and Bessie (Irons) Rhodes. On December 24, 1947, Jack married the former Ms. Carolyn Parker in Iuka, Mississippi. Carolyn survives, along with their two sons, Jack D. Jr. (Kathy) Rhodes of Michigan City, Indiana and James Timothy (Pegi) Rhodes of Niles, Michigan. Jack is also survived by two grandchildren, Laura (Josh) Rhodes-Shasky of Carmel, Indiana, and Jerod (Samantha) Rhodes of Jeffersontown, Kentucky. Surviving as well are Jack's siblings; Phillip John "P.J." (Deglores) Rhodes, Mildred Marks and Betty Faye (Arnold) Ticer, all of Florence, Alabama and Evangeline Ticer of Bessemer, Alabama. Jack was preceded in death by his infant brother. Jack served his country during WWII with the United States Army from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1945. In 1952, Jack moved his family to Mishawaka, and was employed with Kuert Concrete as a driver for 32 years before his retirement in 1985. In his spare time, Jack enjoyed the different seasons in Indiana and hunting and fishing with his sons, and raising hunting dogs. Jack was a life member of the VFW Post #360 and the American Legion Post #308, as well as the Teamsters Local #364. He and his wife were members of the Teamsters #364 Retiree's Club for many years. In his memory, donations may be given to either the Alzheimer's Association or the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

 

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the 2:30 p.m. funeral service today Nov. 7, 2008, at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola, Indiana. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, where VFW Post #360 will perform Military Honors.
