Harold V. Runnels

July 19, 1920 - April 29, 1996

NEW CARLISLE - Memorial services for Harold V. ''Pete'' Runnels, 75, of 113 E. Ada St., who died at 12:50 a.m. Monday in his home, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in New Carlisle United Methodist Church. Cremation will take place. Burial will be in Olive Chapel Cemetery with military services conducted by American Legion Post 297.

 

Mr. Runnels was a ranger for St. Joseph County Park Department for 19 years and retired in 1976 from Allis Chalmers Manufacturing Co. as an inspector after 35 years of service. He was born July 19, 1920, in LaPorte.

 

On Aug. 15, 1942, in New Carlisle, he married Helen A. Napier. She survives with a daughter, Nancy H. Farthing of New Carlisle; a son, Dr. H. Paul of Orchard Lake, Mich.; five granddaughters; one great-grandson; two sisters, Mary E. Shankland and Edna A. VanDusen, both of New Carlisle; and two brothers, Herbert and Joseph, both of New Carlisle. He was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of the church, American Legion Post 297, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9423, Rolling Prairie, Boy Scouts of America Troop 349 scoutmaster, and served as a sports usher for the University of Notre Dame for 30 years. During his service with the park department he received several awards including 1995 Employee of the Year, 1993 Pine Tree Award, and was honored with a shelter in his name at Bendix Woods County Park.
