J. P. Russell dies at age 91

Former Transfer Firm Partner ill 4 years

 

John P. Russell, 91, died at 12:15am today in the Cardinal Convalescent Center, Inc., 118 S William St., after an illness of four years.

 

Mr. Russell, for a number of years, was co-owner with the late William Warner, of the Taggart Transfer Co. which partnership was dissolved when the Company ceased to operate in the late 1920s.

 

Born February 17, 1871, in Otsego MI, he came to South Bend as a boy and spent most of his lifetime here.  In his youth, he was first employed by Meyer’s Hardware, Inc.  He married the former Elsie M. Baker, who died in 1936.  He was a brother of the late Arthur M. Russell, Sr., and also Mrs. William Swintz, who preceded him in death.

 

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Vaughn G. Layman, and a nephew, Arthur M. Russell Jr., both of South Bend.  Friends may call in the Russell Funeral Chapel from 7 to9pm today and Friday.

 

Funeral services will be held there at 1-am Saturday, with Charles W. Hahn, reader and a cousin of Mr. Russell’s officiating at rites of the First Church of Christ, Scientist.  Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.  Mr. Russell was a member of South Bend Lodge 294, Free & Accepted Masons; of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, and the Octogenarian Club.
