Sister M. Eleanore Ryan CSC

Sister M. Eleanore (Mary Alice Ryan), C.S.C., 91, was born in Chicago, Ill., July 7, 1910, daughter of James Ryan and Alice Barlow Ryan. She died following a short illness at Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind.

 

Sister is survived by cousins and friends. She was niece of Mother M. Constantine, C.S.C., and Sister M. Teresa Joseph, C.S.C., both of whom are deceased.

 

Sister M. Eleanore, before entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, was a graduate of the University of Illinois in 1933, with a bachelor of science in education and French. She returned to the University of Illinois and received a degree in library science in 1941. Sister taught school and was a librarian before entering the congregation July 26, 1943.

 

Sister Eleanore taught at St. Joseph's Grade School, South Bend, Ind., 1945, and Bishop Noll in Hammond, Ind., 1946-47. She was assigned to teach at St. Mary's Academy, 1947-1956, and in 1954 received her master of science in library science from the University of Illinois. Sister was college librarian until 1972 at Cardinal Cushing College, Brookline, Mass., then at Dunbarton College, Washington, D.C., 1972-1973. Sister was full-time librarian, 1973-1989, at St. Mary's Academy, Alexandria, Va.

Sister Eleanore retired to Saint Angela Hall, Kensington, Md., 1989, and was active in community service until she transferred to Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, 1997. Sister was active in the ministry of prayer until her death.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Reception of the body and wake will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame.

 

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 15, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame.
