MISHAWAKA - The lovely and beloved Carol Joan Saltzgaber, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, has won her battle over pain at Hospice House in Elkhart. Born on a hot July 3, 1927, the third child of Harvey and Lorein (Newcomer) Parcell, she was a short-fuse firecracker as a child, and spent the rest of her life mastering the patience and empathy that inspired so many others. She sang along whenever there was music, and created music when there was none. She was a selfless and dedicated worker who believed that "together" and "no one is better than anyone else," and that the important thing is just to keep smiling, which she did to the very end. In the summer of 1946 we're all in this she met Gaylord Miller Saltzgaber, who survives, and they were married on June 7, 1947. They raised three children, Mark (Connie) Saltzgaber, Wendy (Garry) Grice and Amy (Rich) Otto. Four grandchildren brought joy to their life. Carolyn (Chris) Barber gave them a great-grandchild, Elijah-Paul. Paul Saltzgaber preceded his grandmother in death in 2005. Marjorie Weber and Alexander Otto complete the family she cherished. Sisters, Betty (Carl) Honold, Phyllis (Bob) Bucher and Janice (Dan) Bryant survive. Brother, Ralph (Edna) Parcell, preceded her in death in June 2009. She loved each of her nieces and nephews. She was one-of-a-kind, broke-the-mold lady who cannot be summed up in an obituary. Her life will be remembered at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 14, in Coalbush United Methodist Church, 15977 Jackson Road, Mishawaka, IN. Family and friends may gather in the Family Life Center of the church between 1:30 and 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to The Center for Hospice, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437; or to The Community Foundation of St. Joseph County for the Paul Saltzgaber Memorial Fund for Reading, Writing and the Arts at P.O. Box 837, South Bend, IN 46624.
