SOUTH BEND - Mary Gertrude Schaefer, 92, formerly of South
Bend, passed away in the assisted living home in Valencia, CA
where she had resided the last number of years. Gert, as she was
known, was born here in South Bend on April 30, 1915, to Oscar
August and Catherine Agnes (Doran) Heinrich.
On May 21, 1938, in South Bend, she married
Frank X. Schaefer. He passed away on August 18, 1989. She retired
in 1979 after fifteen years as a Lunch Room Assistant with the
South Bend Community Schools Corporation. Survivors include two
daughters, Jessica Macken Varga Ballew of South Bend and
Mary Frances Akerlund of Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren,
including Keith Good of Milford, CT; and many
great-grandchildren. A daughter and a son both predeceased her
Kathleen Ann Good on January 24, 1996 and Neil K. Schaefer
on May 16, 1995.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be
celebrated on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. in St.
Joseph Catholic Church, Hill and LaSalle, South Bend. Burial will
follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola. Friends may call
on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the McGann Hay Funerals |
Cremations | Gatherings, University Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Rd. at
Ironwood, where there will be a Rosary/Wake Service at 3:30 p.m.
Mrs. Schaefer was a long-time, active member of St. Joseph Parish
including The Altar Society, Harvest House, Lady Knights of K of
C Council #553, and a Lady of the Fr. J. A. Nieuwland Assembly of
the 4th Degree K of C and was a Lady of the Moose. Memorial
