Robert E. Schalliol

Robert E. Schalliol, 90, passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, while in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka, Ind. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Robert, who was a lifelong Mishawaka resident, was the son of Charles D. Schalliol and Rose Giessler Schalliol, who were also longtime Mishawaka residents. He graduated from Mishawaka High School, and in 1939 graduated with honors from the Indiana University of Business. Robert was an Eagle Scout, a scoutmaster of an area troop, a commissioner of the District Council and camp director of the Mishawaka Scout RES. He retired from the Wheelabrator Corporation in 1980 as the manager of marketing communications with 41 years of service, and then started his own public relations-marketing company, P.R. Associates, Inc.

 

Robert was very active in Mishawaka, holding leadership roles in many organizations including more than 50 years with Kiwanis International where he served as president in 1982-83 and secretary-treasurer for many years, St Andrew's United Church of Christ, Elks International, and the Mishawaka School Board for three terms, where he served in various offices, including president. He also served as president of the PHM chapter of the American Cancer Society for three years. Robert was well-known in Mishawaka and had a large circle of friends. He loved to play cards, and was an avid Indiana University sports fan. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, optimistic attitude and no-nonsense approach to life. He will be missed by his extended family and a large number of local friends who respected him and held him in the highest regard.

 

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Margaret Kizer Schalliol; a daughter, Christina Gibson (Terry) of Burlington, Ky.; a son, Charles Schalliol (Jenny) of Carmel, Ind.; four grandsons, Brian Gibson (Darci), Scott Gibson (Joanna), David Schalliol (Jennifer) and Jonathan Schalliol (Katy Jayne); and two great-grandsons, Nathan and Conner Gibson. He has two surviving brothers, Herbert Schalliol and Edgar Schalliol, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Friends may call and visit today, Dec. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. in Saint Andrew United Church of Christ, 320 E. 4th St., Mishawaka, and a memorial service will follow at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Memorial gifts in Robert's memory may be made to the Kiwanis Club of Mishawaka. Please join his family in celebrating and commemorating the life of this wonderful man.
