Dorothy F. Scheer, 83, formerly of 18355 Crownhill Drive, South Bend, Ind., passed away after an extended illness at Holy Cross Health Care and Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, Dec. 29.

 

Dorothy was born on Sept. 25, 1915, in South Bend, the daughter of the late Margaret Ann and Arthur W. Fortier. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward O. on Dec. 19, 1951; her brothers, Al, John and Bill Fortier; and by her sister, Margaret Bryan.

 

She is survived by her children, Joseph I. Scheer of Royal Oak, Mich., Michael A. Scheer (Sandra Payne) of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Margaret Schaller (Kenneth) of Granger, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Melissa Scheer Roocroft (Robert), Matthew Scheer (Autumn), Todd Scheer, Kelly Scheer, Lara, Mark and Nick Schaller; a great-grandchild, Noah White Scheer; and by 2 sisters, Maxine Rumpf and Betty Rose, both of South Bend.

 

Dorothy Scheer was a graduate of Central High School, the class of 1933.

 

Mrs. Scheer was retired from Allied Signal, where she was the manager of Support Services. She had previously been employed by the South Bend Tackle Company, the City of South Bend as the Deputy City Clerk, and the County Prosecutor's Office.

 

Dorothy Scheer was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party. She was a candidate for the City Clerk's office.

 

She was an active member of the Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority, Zonta International Club, Circle of Mercy, St. Anthony's Rosary Society, Christ Child Society, and Christ the King Harvest House.

 

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where a vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Christ The King Catholic Church, 52473 US 31-33, South Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the Alzheimer's Association.
