Boyd N. Schellinger

Oct. 7, 1927 -- Nov. 8, 2005

Boyd N. Schellinger, 78, of Tanglewood Lane, Mishawaka, formerly of South Bend, passed away suddenly at 1:11 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, with his beloved family by his side.

Boyd was born on October 7, 1927, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to the late F. Armand and Clara (Brown) Schellinger. He attended Holy Cross Grade School, Central Catholic High School (Class of 1945) and graduated from the Valparaiso Technical Institute in 1949. He also dutifully served his country in the United States Navy.

In 1943 Boyd's life was changed forever when he met Patricia Ann (McCarthy) Schellinger, who preceded him in death. The two were married on November 26, 1949, and then resided for three years in Virginia where Boyd worked for WSVA-AM/FM, Harrisonburg, Virginia. While in Virginia, Boyd and Patricia were blessed with the births of daughters, Mary Clare (Schellinger) Hurt, wife of the late Robert G. Hurt of Parma, Ohio, and Pattie Sue (Schellinger) Lindburg, wife of William K. Lindburg of Valparaiso, Ind.

In 1953 Boyd and Patricia returned to South Bend, Ind., where he was employed by WSBT -- AM/TV. In 1957 Boyd joined the Bendix Corporation in Mishawaka and later in South Bend. He retired from Bendix in 1992.

In 1953 the Schellingers were blessed again, this time with their first son, Robert Boyd Schellinger, husband of Lorri (Bazan) Schellinger in LaPorte, Indiana. Their blessings, (although a debatable topic in the Schellinger family) did not end there. Boyd and Patricia continued to build our team in 1955 with Anne Marie Schellinger of South Bend, Indiana, in 1956 to the late John Christopher Schellinger, former husband of Tonya Schellinger in 1960, James A. Schellinger, husband of Laura R. Schellinger of Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1961, Joseph M. Schellinger, husband of Jayne (Hronsk) Schellinger of Granger, Indiana, and in 1966 Lt. Col. Michael G. Schellinger, husband of Megan (Pertz) Schellinger, South Bend, Indiana. Boyd is also survived by his two brothers, Don H. Schellinger, husband of Sheila Lynn Schellinger of Aqua Dulee, California, and Norbert A. Schellinger of South Bend, Indiana.

Boyd and Patricia's family was their pride and joy, and also included (21) twenty-one grandchildren and (5) five great-grandchildren. Boyd also proudly served in the Holy Cross Ushers Club, was a Holy Cross commentator, Chet Waggoner Little League coach, a member of the Holy Cross Athletic Association and an officer of Knute Rockne Babe Ruth. Boyd also truly valued his longtime acquaintances with so many friends from the South Bend, Mishawaka and Notre Dame communities, and was highly regarded as a man of honor and dignity by all.

The family will receive friends today from 3 to 9 p.m. in the Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, 574/289-1000, where a Rosary vigil service will be said at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Friday, Nov. 11, in Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Bend, with the burial immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery in Mishawaka, Ind. (all times are South Bend)
