Sister Mary Walburga CSC, 100, oldest sister of the Holy Cross order, died early today in Saint Mary’s Convent. She would have been 101 on Nov. 3. She came to St. Mary’s Convent in 1949 from Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus, Ohio, where she had been stationed since 1899. Born Elizabeth Scherer in 1865 in Tremont, Pa. she attended elementary school in Portsmouth, Ohio, and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1887. She received the habit in 1888 and made her profession of vows in 1890. Before entering nursing services at Mount Carmel Hospital she had been stationed at the former St. John’s School in Goshen; the former Holy Angels Academy in Logansport; Lancaster, Pa.; and St. Mary’s College in South Bend.

 

Services will be held at 7 a.m. Saturday in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto on St. Mary’s College campus, with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, also on the campus. Friends may call until 7 p.m. Saturday at the convent parlor.
