George A. Scheuer

George A. Scheuer, 99, died Tuesday, July 6, at 11:10 p.m. in Fountainview Place, Mishawaka, Ind.

He was born June 10, 1905, the only son of Nicholas K. and J. Elizabeth (Philipson) Scheuer in Aubbeenaubbee Township, Fulton County, Ind., near Monterey, Ind. He graduated from Monterey High School in 1924 and from the University of Notre Dame in 1928. He also received a master of arts degree at Notre Dame in 1975. He worked on the former South Bend News-Times, the Associated Press in Detroit and Lansing, Mich., the Chicago Journal of Commerce, the former Chicago Sun, the South Bend Tribune and the Notre Dame Magazine. He also had been an instructor at Indiana University, South Bend, Ind., and at the Forever Learning Institute.

 

On May 21, 1938, he was married to Evelyn C. Seyboldt, who died Sept. 25, 1997. Surviving are four sons, Nicholas G. of Rockford, Ill., Martin E. of Peachtree City, Ga., Paul R. of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and Thomas J. of South Bend; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend. He served as secretary of the South Bend Area Council of Catholic Men and of the Notre Dame Class of 1928. As an amateur radio operator with the call of WB98CC he served with the St. Joseph County Emergency Services organization and as a board member of the Michiana Amateur Radio Club. As a Boy Scout leader, he had been awarded the Silver Beaver and the Catholic Committee on Scouting St. George Medal. He also received the Notre Dame Reynolds Award for service to youth and was inducted into the South Bend Community Hall of Fame. The South Bend Park Department named a river walk in his honor for work with the Michigan Watershed along the stream.

 

Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund, 211 N. St. Louis St., South Bend, IN 46617; to the Forever Leaning Institute, 308 S. Scott St., South Bend, IN 46601; or to the Boy Scouts of America, LaSalle Council, 1433 Northside Boulevard, South Bend, IN 46615. Services will be at 10 a.m. today, July 10, in the St. Joseph Catholic Church on the corner of LaSalle and Hill Streets, South Bend. Friends called Friday, July 9, in the McGann Funeral Home, University Area Chapel, 2313 E. Edison Road, South Bend, where a Rosary service will be held at 4:30 p.m.

Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, Ind.
