SOUTH BEND - Clayton E. Schimmel, 61, of Diamond Avenue, died at 9:12 a.m. Wednesday in Memorial Hospital. Mr. Schimmel retired in 1991 from Superior Waste Co. as a truck driver after 17 years of service.

 

He was born Oct. 22, 1933, in South Bend.

 

On Oct. 31, 1961, in Chicago, he married Gerry Reed. She survives with five daughters, Debbie Barlow of Walnut Hill, Fla., Linda Shirey of Columbus, Ohio, Kathy Calvetti, Sheila Crandell and Mickey Snyder, all of South Bend; a son, Danny of Chicago; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Greathouse of Niles.

 

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 360, Mishawaka; American Legion Post 50 and was a veteran of the Korean War.

 

Services will be at 6 p.m. today in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive. Cremation will take place.

 

Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Riverview Cemetery, where military services will be conducted by VFW Post 360, Mishawaka.

 

Friends may call two hours before services in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph County Humane Society.
