John W. Schindler Jr.

April 25, 1922 - March 7, 2006

John W. Schindler Jr., 83, of Mishawaka, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 7, 2006, in his home.

John was born April 25, 1922, in Mishawaka, to the late John W. Schindler Sr. and Ola (Buchheit) Schindler. He grew up in Mishawaka and graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1938. John graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1942, and then served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He furthered his education, graduating from the University of Chicago, School of Law in 1947.

John was an attorney, practicing in Mishawaka from 1947 to 1995. He served for many years as the attorney for the City of Mishawaka. John was a member of the State and County Bar Associations. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and taking cruise vacations with his wife.

On June 26, 1962, in Rutherford, New Jersey, John married the former Ann M. O'Malley, who survives. Other surviving family members include two daughters, Mary Ann (John) Fordyce of Newark, Delaware, and Martha Jean (Don) Connors of Evergreen, Colorado; a sister, Helen (Bill) Phelan of Iowa City, Iowa; and a grandchild, Aidan Schindler Fordyce.

Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by his stepmother, Isabel Schindler; and two sisters, Louise and Christine.

Friends may spend time with John's family today from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in Thallemer, Goethals & Wells Funeral Home, 503 West Third Street, Mishawaka. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 225 S. Mill Street, Mishawaka. with John's brother-in-law, Rev. William O'Malley, officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Mishawaka.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church. Envelopes are available in the funeral home.
