SOUTH BEND - Joseph D. Schmitt, 81, passed away at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, in the Holy Cross Care and Rehabilitation Center. Joseph was born August 23, 1926, in South Bend, to the late George V. and Helen (Summers) Schmitt Sr. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Dr. George Schmitt. Survivors include a nephew, George (Enid) Schmitt of Elkhart, IN; three nieces, Virginia (Dennis) Rhodes of Mishawaka, Jeanne Schmitt of Elkhart and Patricia (Kirk) Kenaga of Mishawaka.

Joseph was an attorney in the area, retiring in 1982. He was a graduate of Indiana University and the Notre Dame School of Law. He was a member of the St. Joseph County, IN, and American Bar Association, American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council #553, and the Elks Club. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving his country from 1944 to 1948.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place at Welsheimer Crematory. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Highland Cemetery (graveside), 2257 Portage Ave., South Bend, with Rev. Michael Mathews of Holy Cross Catholic Church officiating. Military honors will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637
