Alex J. Schneider (Feb. 27, 1912 -- April 10, 2005)

Alex J. Schneider, 93, of 2120 Morehouse Ave., Elkhart, Ind., died after a brief illness at 12:20 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in Rosewood Terrace Nursing Home.

He was born on Feb. 27, 1912, in Ozlip, Burgenland, Austria, to the late Johann Schneider and Mary (Lendavich) Schneider. He married Rose Goepfrich in June 1937 in South Bend, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 30, 2000. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, John and Joseph Schneider; and two sons-in-law, J.P. Walsh and Horst Schindel.

He had worked on the New York Central Railroad and retired from Miles Laboratories in 1975 after working there. His family immigrated to the South Bend-Elkhart area in 1913. He was a lifelong member of the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Theresa Walsh) Freeman of Mishawaka, Ind., and Joan Schindel of North Vernon, Ind.; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, in St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church, 1108 S. Main Street, Elkhart, IN 46516. Rev. Jack Overmyer, St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, will officiate.

Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today, April 12, in Westbrook-Metz & Clouse Funeral Home, 1129 Prairie St., Elkhart, where a vigil service will be at 2:30 p.m.

Memorials may be sent to the St. Vincent dePaul Catholic parish, Elkhart, IN; Queen of Peace Parish, 4508 Vistula, Mishawaka, IN 46544; or to St. Mary's Parish, 212 Washington St., North Vernon, IN 47265.
