Regis Schumacher

June 25, 1920 - July 4, 2001

Regis Schumacher, 81, of Winding Wood Drive, South Bend, passed away at 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 4 in his residence after a lengthy illness. Regis was born on June 25, 1920 in Mishawaka to the late Peter J. and Barbara (Stoeckinger) Schumacher.

On May 1, 1947 in Milwaukee, Wis., Regis married the former Caroline Ann Dombrowski. She preceded him in death on January 24, 1995. Also preceding him in death were two sisters; Marie Hirl and Bernadette Lenhard, and four brothers; Joseph, Paul, Clarence, and Herman Schumacher.

Regis is survived by a daughter, Marian Lee Schumacher of Chicago and a son, Martin Schumacher of South Bend.

Regis was a bricklayer foreman for the former Schumacher Construction Co., Mishawaka. After that he spent time with both Sollitt and Casteel Construction Companies. He was a 1939 graduate of Central Catholic High School and a World War II Army veteran. Regis was a member of V.F.W. Post 360, an usher at St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, and a 4th Degree member of the Fr. Nieuwland Assembly of the Knights of Columbus Council 1878.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 6 in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7 in St. Joseph Church, Mishawaka, with Fr. Robert A. Yast officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Mishawaka.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County or the Visiting Nurses Association.
