Lester Burton Schutz

Lester "Primo" Burton Schutz, 87, of South Chicago Street, South Bend, Ind., died at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14, in the Healthwin Specialized Care Facility. He was born on Oct. 4, 1912, in Springfield, Ill., and lived in this area for 40 years, coming from Bremen, Ind. Mr. Schutz retired in 1972 from Fruhauf Trailer Company after 29 years of service.

 

On Sept. 7, 1947, in Bremen, he married Louise Marlowe (Hatchley), who survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Mary Lou Hatchley of Mishawaka and Mavis Lewis of Baton Rouge, La.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and by a sister, Minna Manges of Bremen. Mr. Schutz was preceded in death by a daughter, Irene M. Schutz, who died in 1953; two brothers, John and Oliver Schutz; and by a sister, Freida Leeper.

 

Mr. Schutz was an Army veteran of World War II, and the recipient of the Purple Heart. He served in the 7th Army Company B, 48th Armored Division, under General Patton. He was also a member of Disabled American Veterans #6 and Teamsters Local #364. He was a loving, faithful husband, father and grandfather, who loved his country and had great trust in his Creator. He will be sorrowfully missed.

 

Family and friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at Bremen Cemetery.
