Daniel F. Shafer

July 6, 1918 - Jan. 4, 2001

Daniel Francis Shafer, 82, of East Grove Street, Mishawaka , Ind., passed away at 9:07 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 4, in Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center, South Bend, Ind.

Dan was born on July 6, 1918, in Mishawaka, to the late Daniel A. and Matilda (Hendwieger) Shafer. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Beatrice Kuesphert and Angela Carini; and by a brother, Ronald Shafer. On July 2, 1942, Dan married the former Helen Louise Lundry, who also preceded him in death on Sept. 29, 1974.

On Nov. 17, 1989, Dan married Catherine Michels McCoy, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Deanne (Paul) Hans of Phoenix, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Alison (Timothy) Danielson of Chandler, Ariz.; three stepsons, Michael McCoy of South Bend, Timothy McCoy of South Bend and Martin McCoy of Ft. Myers, Fla.; 13 step-grandchildren and 17 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Shafer of Mishawaka; and by several nieces and nephews.

Dan retired from UniRoyal, Inc., in Mishawaka after 25 years of service. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, Mishawaka, was a World War II Army veteran, and was a member of American Legion Post 303.

Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 7, in the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 2:30 p.m.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, in St. Monica Church, with Fr. Derrick Sneyd officiating. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
