Helen M. Whippo Shafer, 75, of St. Paul's Retirement Community, died at 11:30 PM Wednesday in her home.  Mrs. Shafer was born Nov. 9, 1912, in Lakeville and was a lifetime area resident.  On September 19, 1932, in South Bend, as Helen Herbster, she married Charles W. Whippo.  He died September 6, 1957.  On November 23, 1963, in South Bend, she married Theodore D. Shafer.  He died April 4, 1977.  She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Seitz of South Bend; two stepdaughters, Dorothy Sheetz of Mishawaka and Roseanne Eddie of South Bend; a son, Robert Whippo of Palatine, Illinois; a stepson, Theodore D. Jr. of South Bend; 32 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edna Berger of South Bend, Hilda Bartlett of Bloomington, Indiana, Glee Fair of Bremen and Carol Currie of California; and a brother, Donald Herbster of Lakeville.

Services will be at 10 AM Saturday in the Guisinger Colonial Chapel Funeral Home.  Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.  Friends May call from 2 to 8 PM Friday in the funeral home, where a rosaries will be said at 4 PM Mrs. Shafer was a member of the auxiliary to American Legion Post 303.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Chapel of St. Paul's Retirement Community.

 

[Note: the child Margaret is actually a child to Charles Whippo and his first wife. The first wife died when Margaret was only two years old, thus Helen raised her as her own]

Services for Helen M. On September 19, 1932 in South Bend, as Helen Herbster, she married Charles W. Whippo, who preceded her in death.  Her second husband, Theodore D. Shafer, died April 4, 1977.  Survivors include a brother, Donald Herbster of Lakeville.  Two sons, Charles and James Whippo, preceded her in death.  Memorial contributions may be made to the chapel of St. Paul's Retirement Community.
