SOUTH BEND - Irene R. Shafer, 85, passed away at 8 p.m.
Monday, April 21, 2008, in Fountainview Place, Mishawaka, IN. She
was born February 9, 1923, in Bremen, IN, to Albert and Gladys (Yenna)
Berger.
n June 28, 1941, in South Bend, she married
Kenneth E. Shafer Sr., who preceded her in death on March 12,
1989. Mrs. Shafer is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Michael) Tompkins
of South Bend, IN, and Bonnie (Stephen) Jenks of Largo,
FL; a son, Ken (Martha) Shafer of Columbia, MD; six
grandchildren, Nathaniel D. Jenks, Amber M. (Justin) Frederiksen,
Brenda H. (Michael) Norris, Tesla E. (Stefano) Profumo,
Jason K. Shafer and Anthony I. Tompkins. A son, Gary M. Shafer,
and a sister, Joan Tucker, preceded her in death. Mrs. Shafer was
a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and was employed at
Cook's Department Store for 20 years. Mrs. Shafer was an avid
gardener and especially loved roses. She was a former Cub Scout
den mother and a Camp Fire Girls leader.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Saturday, April 26, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel,
3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, IN. Burial will follow at
Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family
from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 25, in the funeral home.
