Sylvia I. Shumaker

SOUTH BEND - Sylvia Irene Shumaker, 84, of South Bend, passed away Sunday evening in Memorial Hospital following an illness. She was born July 10, 1925, in South Bend, to the late Michael and Irene (Farkas) Barna.

 

 On January 11, 1948, in Epworth Memorial Church, she was united in marriage to Mark I. Shumaker, who survives along with children, Cheri McCray (Cliff), Linda Shenefield (Gary) of South Bend and Kathy Sellers (Tom) of Granger; and a son, James F. of South Bend; eight grandchildren, Jen Weaver (Sam), David McCray (Amanda) of South Bend, Allison Hrybyk (Nick) of Goose Creek, S.C., Michael Shenefield of South Bend, Christopher, Megan, Katelyn and Drew Sellers of Granger; three great-grandchildren, Devin and Aidan McCray, and soon great-grandchild, Weaver; and a brother, Michael Barna of Schererville, IN.

 

 Sylvia retired from WSBT as a librarian and worked there from 1971 to 1990. Prior she worked for South Bend Electric and Wheelabrator in South Bend. Sylvia and Mark were longtime members of Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church and she was the historian of the church. She and Mark loved children so much they became Foster Parents and over the years had 13 to 14 children they helped. Sylvia was a leader in Indian Guides at Kaley Elementary School and a member of the Home Economics Club in South Bend. She had a great love for flowers and all animals during her life she will be remembered fondly.

 

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 4th, in Epworth Memorial United Methodist Church, 2404 Lincoln Way West, and visitation will be today from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., and the family will greet friends one hour prior to services at church.
