SOUTH BEND - Alfred Joseph Smith, 83, residing in South Bend, IN, passed away at 1:37 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Hospice House, South Bend. Smitty was born April 28, 1926 in Monterey, IN, the son of Albert Smith and Irene (Keller) Cottrell. He graduated from Washington High School and served honorably for the US Army in the Korean War. Alfred was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He retired as an inspector with the Honeywell Corporation. On February 14, 1953 in South Bend, he married the former Mary Lou Metzger, who survives. Alfred is also survived by one daughter, Gail S. (J. Wesley) Olds of Warsaw, IN; one son, Alan J. (Glenda) Smith of Chantilly, VA; six grandchildren, Matt and Emilee Olds, William Olds, Mary Olds, Melissa Olds, Kevin Smith and Alison Smith; and one great grandson, Lucas Olds. The family wishes to give special thanks to Drs. Ron Nelson, John DeCelles, and Jon Kubley, and the staff and volunteers at Hospice House. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 6, 2010 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 309 S. Taylor Street, South Bend. Graveside services and military rites will follow at Sumption Prairie Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 4 - 8 p.m. Friday, March 5, 2010 at the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where a rosary will be said at 4:30 p.m. Expressions of sympathy on behalf of Alfred Smith may be offered to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637 or The Christ Child Society, 308 S.
