Andrew Thomas Smithberger

Andrew Smithberger, 84, of 53085 Oakmont Park East Drive, died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday in his home. He was a professor at the University of Notre Dame from 1925 to 1971 teaching English literature of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. During this time. He was a teaching fellow in English from 1925 to 1927, an instructor in English from 1927 to 1930, assistant professor of English from 1930 to 1933, associate professor of English from 1933 to 1938, and a professor of English from 1938 to 1971. In 1971 he became a professor emeritus of English.

He was born March 14, 1905, in Harriettsville, Ohio, and lived in South Bend since 1925, coming from Ohio. On June 24, 1930 in Mishawaka, he married Mary D. Myers. She survives with two daughters, Beth A. Pulte of Bloomfield Hills, Mich. and Susan M. Smithberger of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Thomas J. of El Cerrito, Calif. and Andrew W. of Elgin, Ill; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame, Knight of Columbus, Santa Maria Council 553, South Bend Rotary, Holy Cross Society of Christ the King, College English Association, past president of Indiana College English Association, Lambda Chi Alpha and Tau Kappa Alpha.

He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Ohio in 1925 and his master of arts degree from Notre dame in 1927. He was the author of two books, the managing editor of the Natural Law Forum from 1956 to 1968, editor of the American Journal of Jurisprudence from 1968 to 1969, assistant chairman of the English Department from 1953 to 1971, and editor of RONDevous, a newsletter for retirees of Notre dame.

 Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Hickel Funeral Home, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Notre Dame Scholarship Fund or the charity of the donor’s choice.
