Dean Smith dies at 69 from injuries

 

Dean N. Smith, 69, of 16626 Berry Ave., Mishawaka, died at 12:50am Wednesday in Memorial Hospital from the result of head injuries he suffered on October 31.  Smith, a self-employed painter and paper hanger, fell about ten feet from scaffolding while working at the First Seventh-day Adventist Church, according to St Joseph County Coroner Dr. Louis H. Grwinski.

 

He was transported from the church to Memorial Hospital by a South Bend Fire Department ambulance unit around 9:35am on October 31.

 

Born on October 10, 1914, in Wells County IN, he lived in the South Bend-Mishawaka area since 1937.  On April 9, 1939, in South Bend, he married the former Aretta Elizabeth (Betty) Wilson.  She survives with a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia M. Bud of Laurel MD; a son, Stanley D. Smith of Wilder ID; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a brother, Donald L. Smith of Glenwood CA.

 

Services will be at 11am Monday in the Hickey Funeral Home.  Rev. Jerry Fore, pastor of the First Seventh-Day Adventist Church will officiate.  Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. 

 

Friends may call from 3 to 8pm Sunday in the Hickey Funeral Home.  He was a member of First Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and served in the US Army Medical Corps during WW II.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Quiet Hour, Redlands CA 92373, of to the South Bend Junior Academy Worthy Student Fund.
