Helen Josephine Smith

Mrs. Helen Josephine Smith passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 4:30 p.m. in Rosewood Terrace Nursing Home. Mrs. Smith formerly resided in South Bend at Karl King Towers before ill health moved her to Elkhart to be close to her family. Mrs. Smith was born in Walkerton, Ind. and lived in this area all of her life. She served as a school teacher in North Liberty, and was head librarian at Lincoln Township Liberty in Walkerton for many years.

 

On March 3, 1947, in Kansas City, Kan., as Helen Faulkner she married Lloyd Hugh Smith. He passed away on Dec. 20, 1977. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dona (Arthur) Vitou of Elkhart, Mrs. Bonnie (Mike) Kropff of Grove, Okla., and Mrs. Rosanna Caper of Sun City, Fla.; a son, Jacob (Lois) Smith of Sun City, Fla.; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Goldie Hostetler Skinner of Walkerton.

 

Mrs. Smith was a member of Central United Methodist Church in South Bend and Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic Fraternity and a 58-year member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 290, North Liberty. She was also past president of Central United Methodist Women and on the Board of South Bend District United Methodist Women, an Auxiliary member of Hope Rescue Mission and Hamilton Grove Retirement Home, New Carlisle. She was a graduate of the Walkerton Public Schools of which she was valedictorian and received a Tri Kappa Key. She attended Indiana Central College and graduated from North Manchester College and from IUSB with a degree in Library Science.

Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Foundation (Sunday School of the Air), Salvation Army, Hope Rescue Missions, Goodwill or Hamilton Grove Retirement Community.

 

Services will be held at 6 p.m. today, Dec. 27, in Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Rev. Mary Hubbard, pastor of Central United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Walkerton. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday in Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home.
