MISHAWAKA - Jay C. Smith, 73, of Richmond, Ind., formerly of Mishawaka, died of natural causes at 11:25 a.m. Sunday in his home. Mr. Smith retired from White Farm Equipment Co., South Bend.

He was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Saginaw, Mich. On Aug. 19,1954, in Michigan, he married Mary A. Johnson. She survives with four daughters, Viva Hathaway of Germany, Kay McMahon of Crossett, Ark., Patricia Rainey of Clarksdale, Miss., and Joan Arnold of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons, John T. of West Monroe, La., and Michael of Michigan City; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leatha Kelly of Hudson, Fla. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 360, American Legion Post 143, Fayette, Ohio, and the Moose Lodge.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 1201 S. Michigan St., South Bend. Burial will be in Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
