MISHAWAKA - Bertha was born in Mishawaka to the late Phillip and Irma (Buysse) Vervynckt. On February 27, 1933, she married Clyde A. Snyder at the home of his sister, Mildred B. (Snyder) Hertel, in Mishawaka. Bertha and Clyde were married 73 years and would have celebrated their 74th anniversary last February 27, 2007, except for the death of Clyde on February 12. They had lived at the same address since 1937. Bertha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She died on Christmas Day in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka.

Also surviving are three granddaughters, Laura A. (Michael) Hiles of Lafayette, IN, Rebecca A. (Douglas) Overmyer of Montrose, CO, and Deborah A. (Keith) Mosley of Apopka, FL; two grandsons, Brian M. (Kristi) Sloan of Middlebury, IN, and Brent D. Snyder of Portsmouth, VA. Five great-grandchildren also survive her, Brady and Matthew Overmyer, Christopher and Connor Mosley, and Kourtney Sloan. A sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Maurice Scheyving of South Bend, survive her. A daughter, Lois A. Snyder, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Schweisberger; and five Vervynckt brothers, Ardile, Francis ("Cece"), Johnny, Maurice and Raymond. In 1954 the St. Joseph County Treasurer hired Bertha, a Republican, as a counter clerk in the tax office. Over a period of 27 years, working for several different Democratic treasurers, she became a bookkeeper and supervisor of the temporary Mishawaka property tax office. She retired in 1981.
