Sister M. Joan of Arc Spates CSC

SOUTH BEND - Sister M. Joan of Arc Spates CSC, 77, of Queen of Peace Convent, St. Mary’s, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Medical Center, after an illness. Sister M. Jjoan of Arc was born Dec. 8, 1915, in Atlanta as Mary Julia Spates.

 

She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, St. Mary’s on Feb. 1, 1933; was received as a novice, Aug. 15, 1933; and professed her final vows, Aug. 15, 1935. She was assigned to elementary schools in New York City and Bangladesh. She also served as archivist, sacristan and director of business affairs at St. Mary’s and special projects in Virginia and Maryland. She is survived by twi sisters, Mickey Sunier of Crawfordsville, Ind. and Clara Scherer of Titusville, Fla.; and two brothers, William R. Spates and John Spates.

 

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary’s and burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary’s. Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Memorial contributions made be made to the Sisters of Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund.
