Charles C. Sprague

SOUTH BEND - Charles C. Sprague, 64, of South Bend, IN passed away unexpectedly at his residence on Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Chuck was born on March 19, 1944 in Mishawaka, IN to the late Charles C. & Helen (Hickman) Sprague. Chuck married the former Connie Stewart on December 16, 1967 in Rockford, IL. Chuck and Connie shared forty years of trust and commitment to each other. His wife Connie and their two daughters Jennifer Sprague of Manhattan Beach, CA and Suzanne Sprague of Chicago, IL survive Chuck. Also surviving Chuck are his two stepbrothers, Christopher (Janna) Rhodes of Indianapolis, IN and Eric (Janet) Rhodes of Little Rock, Arkansas; and three stepsisters, Priscilla Stevens of Sault Ste Marie, MI; Cynthia (Craig) Shutt of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Stephanie (Bill) Buck of Princeton, Texas. A stepsister, Mary Lisa Rhodes and stepbrother Thomas Rhodes precede Chuck in death. Chuck retired in 2005 after teaching for 39 years as an elementary school teacher from the South Bend Community School Corporation, where he taught 4th grade at Eggleston and Hamilton schools. He also taught at the Walkerton school district and was an elementary school Track & Field coach. Chuck held the position of the local Treasurer of the N.E.A. and was a past State & National Delegate of the N.E.A. Chuck was also a member of the Mishawaka & Indiana University Alumni Clubs, and he was a member of Chi-Phi fraternity at IU. Chuck was a football usher for over 30 years at the campus of the University of Notre Dame, where he also helped in the circulation of the campus newspaper The Observer. He was also a referee at Notre Dame during the track & field season. Chuck held the position as official timekeeper and referee for the A.A.U, Collegiate and Olympic Kayak try-outs at the East Race Waterway in South Bend. Chuck enjoyed shopping and was always looking for the best deals in town. Even more so, he enjoyed contacting his friends to spread the wealth of the bargains he found.

 

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 16, 2008, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Bubb Funeral Chapel 3910 N. Main St. Mishawaka, IN. The Funeral service will be held on Monday, November 17, at 10 a.m. in the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Ervin Mize officiating. Burial is to follow the service at the Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
