South Bend Tribune 7/2/2008
SOUTH BEND - Virginia W. Spurgeon, 86, died Monday morning in Memorial Hospital. She was born March 16, 1922, in Millersburg, Indiana, to William and Pearl (Searfoss) Wolf, who preceded her in death along with four siblings, Fern Trumphour, Ruth Crothers, Edna Hart and Stanley Wolfe.

On June 8, 1940, in the First Presbyterian Church of Goshen, Indiana, she married her high school sweetheart, Harry J. Spurgeon, who died December 17, 1993. Surviving are three daughters, Pamela R. (John) Bliley and Patricia M. Spurgeon, both of South Bend, and Paula K. (Daniel) Spink of Granger. She is also survived by Rosemary Lindahl, who has been part of the family for more than 38 years, and thought of Virginia as her second mother. Virginia is also survived by two grandchildren, Michael Spink and Joey Bliley, and two great-grandchildren, Griffin and Hope Spink. Mrs. Spurgeon spent most of her life working in the hardware business. First in the Goshen Hardware store and then for Meyers Hardware after they moved to South Bend in 1952. In the years before her retirement, she was setting up hardware for various contractors who bought from Meyers Hardware. She was even known to put on a hard hat to go out to a job site to see what was needed. She knew every nut, bolt, screw, nail, lock, etc., that was made. She also loved cruises and Vegas. She loved Siegfried and Roy, and had seen their show 18 times.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 3rd, in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 3516 East Jefferson Boulevard, South Bend, with Dr. Patrick Summer, pastor of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church, South Bend, officiating. Family and friends may visit from 6 p.m. until services begin in the funeral home. Virginia was a member of Evangel Heights United Methodist Church and taught third grade Sunday school for many years. Memorials may be made to Pet Refuge, 2300 West 6th, Mishawaka, IN; or to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN. The family wishes to thank Mom's wonderful caregivers: Lori, who with her gentle, kind, and loving nature has treated mom for 31/2 years as if she were her own, and Melody, who was only with us a short time, with her compassionate personality quickly became a special person in mom's life. We would also like to thank Dr. Art Schroeder for his special attention to Mom while at Memorial Hospital, and we will be forever grateful to nurses Kathy and Robbie, and Dr. Mark McGillem for being with mom as she passed into eternal life.
