John C. Squires

GRANGER - John C. Squires, a former Granger resident and owner of Country Squire Grocery, died April 5, 2007, in San Antonio, Texas, at age 94. John was born in Mishawaka on February 5, 1913, and upon graduation from Mishawaka High School attended Ball State Teachers College. Following a short stint as an elementary school teacher, John joined the U.S. Postal Service for 17 years before going into business for himself.

 

Upon retiring in 1975, John and Mae traveled the country extensively before making the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas their permanent home. They settled in Pharr, Texas, in 1980. John was preceded in death by wives, L. Mae Squires, Ruth Walker-Squires and Martha Rabb-Squires; a daughter, Janet Grace; and two brothers, Charles and Howard. He is survived by a brother, Frederick of California; two sons, John C. Jr. and wife Susie, James L. and wife, Kathy, both of San Antonio; five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. John was also a 32nd degree Mason as well as a Shriner.

 

John requested his ashes be spread on the Plantation South golf course in Pharr, Texas. Arrangements entrusted to Puente & Sons Funeral Chapels, 3520 South Flores Street, San Antonio, TX 78204 (210-533-5300).
