Robert A. Squires

March 11, 1923 - Oct. 20, 2006

Robert A. Squires, 83, of South Bend, IN, was taken by the Heavenly Father on Friday, Oct 20, 2006.

Mr. Squires was born March 11, 1923, in Worcester, Mass., to William E. Squires and Clara Faye (Pifer) Squires. His parents and a brother, William E. Jr., preceded him in death.

Robert graduated from Plymouth High School in 1941. He also attended Ferris Institute in Michigan. Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in the Air Corps as a staff sergeant. Robert flew many dangerous missions before being shot down over Austria and being captured by the enemy. He spent nine months as a P.O.W. before being liberated near the war's end. He went to work for Studebaker and supported his mother until her death. On Nov. 5, 1949, he married Ruth Leota Van Horn, and they had two children: a son, James R., and a daughter, Jeri Sue, who both survive. After working many years at Studebaker, he went to work for McMahon Construction Co. as an operating engineer until he retired. He also drove a taxi cab during winter months. During his lifetime Bob enjoyed family get-togethers, games, especially horseshoes and chess, and of course N.D. football. Bob had eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren whom he loved greatly. Bob was a member of the U.A.W. #5, Operating Engineers Local #150 and the Teamsters Union Local #144 during his career, and retired in 1982.

He is survived by a son, James R. (Helen) Squires of Lakeville, IN, and a daughter, Jeri Sue (Joseph) Edwards of Cedar Lake, IN. Eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bob was a loving, generous person who always put others' needs ahead of his own.

Bob you will be in our hearts forever.

One life lived may seem so small

to those who didn't know you.

The Love and Kindness you've given us all

has grown bigger than you ever knew

Our Hero and role model of True Christianity

You laid your life down for others

Our friends became part of your family

Welcomed like sisters and brothers.

Too often times you've done without

and gave to one of us in need.

You believed in us when others would doubt

We knew we were loved indeed.

You loved us when we felt alone

and took care of us when no one else could.

Selflessly you strived for what you believed was right.

Too few people have been so Good!

I thank God for everything you were

and are to all of us that knew you.

"WELL DONE GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT"

Be with God now, and some day we'll be with you!
