Alfred A. Stachowiak (April 13, 1922 - Dec. 23, 2000)

Alfred A. Stachowiak, 78, formerly of South Grant Street, South Bend, Ind., but residing on Fairway, South Bend, died at 8:50 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 23, in his daughter Karen's house.

He was born on April 13, 1922, in South Bend, and was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Stachowiak retired in 1984 from Georgia Pacific after 15 years of service. On June 5, 1942, in Paris, Texas, he married Geraldine C. Bronski, who preceded him in death in 1996. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Hatton; a son, James Stachowiak; a sister, Henrietta Goepfrich; and by his parents, Anthony and Hattie Stachowiak.

He is survived by four daughters, Karen (Dennis) Sloma of South Bend, Kathryn (Clyde Jr.) Moore of Syracuse, Ind., Judi (David) Newland and Cindy Couch, both of Mishawaka, Ind.; a son, Thomas (Brenda) Stachowiak of South Bend; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; four sisters, Theresa Grayzck and Stella Biebuyck, both of South Bend, Jeanette Jasinski and Loretta Futa, both of North Liberty, Ind.; two brothers, Ernie Prentkowski and Marion Stachowiak, both of South Bend; and by his companion, Bernadine Makielski of South Bend.

Mr. Stachowiak was an Army veteran of World War II where he received three Bronze Stars. He was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #1954 in North Liberty.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 27, in the ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 28, in St. Patrick Catholic Church where he was a member. Entombment will follow in the Resurrection Gardens Mausoleum at St. Joseph Cemetery.
