Francis J. Steif

SOUTH BEND - Francis Joseph "Frank" Steif, a 45 year resident of Redondo Beach, CA and formerly of South Bend, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2010. Frank was born in South Bend, IN, on October 14, 1930, to the late Lawrence J. and Verada (Kissell) Steif. Frank was also preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Bernard Steif, who died in 1934. Frank graduated form Central Catholic High School, South Bend and the University of Notre Dame in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On April 26, 1958, Frank married Shirley M. Kuminecz, his wife of 52 years, in South Bend, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Karen (Shawn) Crawford of Aurora, Illinois; son, Kevin Steif of Redondo Beach, California; daughter, Kathi (John) Ilgen of Oceanside, California and daughter, Karol (Danny) Findley, Scotts Valley, California; grandchildren, Christopher and Caroline Crawford, Courtney and Brittany Steif, Cassandra and Reese Findley; and his sister, Anna Marie (Charles) Slomski of South Bend and her children, Charles Christopher (Chris) and Joanne Verada Slomski; a brother-in-law, Ralph DeMeyer and his children, Chris and Cindy; a brother-in-law, Charles Williams and his children, Sandy and Sherry. Frank was employed by the Magnavox Research Labs of Torrance, California for 35 years. Well loved and respected, he built friendships that lasted throughout his life. Frank was an avid golfer and loved to watch Notre Dame football, his "beloved Irish". A long time member of St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, he never missed Saturday mass and enjoyed socializing with fellow parishioners. Above all, Frank was a devoted family man, bother and uncle. He treasured time spent with each member of his family. A mass of Christian Burial and Memorial Service will be celebrated on May 17, 2010 in St. Lawrence Martyr Catholic Church, Redondo Beach, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 1900 S. Prospect Ave., Redondo Beach, CA 90277 or to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
