Rev. Gregory J. Steigmeyer, CSC, 66, of Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, died unexpectedly about noon Monday Dec 5, 1983 of an apparent heart attack. He was born on 8-27-1917 in Fort Wayne and attended St. Patrick's parochial school and Central Catholic High School there, entering the Holy Cross Seminary, Notre Dame, in 1932.

On Aug. 16,1936 he made his first professional vows, and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1939. After theological studies at Holy Cross Foreign Mission Seminary in Washington DC, he was ordained to the priesthood on June 24, 1943 in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame IN, by Bishop John F. Noll. He said his 1st mass at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Fort Wayne IN.

 

Father Steigmeyer taught at St. Joseph's University in New Brunswick, Canada from 1943 to 1945. In 1945 he went to East Bengal, India, now Bangladesh, as a missionary where he served until 1964 and from 1967 to 1970 in the parishes of various villages of the Archbishop of Dhaka.

 

From 1964 to 1967, he served as superior of Holy Cross Foreign Mission Seminary, Washington DC, and from 1970 to 1979, he served in parishes of the Diocese of Grand Rapids MI. In 1979 he retired to Holy Cross House at Notre Dame because of ill health. He lived there until his death.

 

He is survived by 3 brothers, Edward, Charles and Rev. Robert C. Steigmeyer CSC, all of Grand Rapids MI.

 

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame. Rev John C. Gerber CSC, assistant provincial, will officiate, and Rev. Thomas J. McDonagh CSC will deliver the homily.  Friend may call after 3:30 p.m. in the Moreau Seminary Chapel, Notre Dame, where a wake service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Robert C. Steigmeyer CSC, will officiate the wake service, with Rev Edmond N. Goedert CSC delivering the eulogy. Burial will be in Community Cemetery, Notre Dame. The Hickey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
