Sister M. Louis Stifter CSC

Sister M. Louis (Mary Angela Stifter), CSC, 82, was born July 23, 1922, in Winsted, MN, the seventh of 10 children of the late Louis and Amanda Sherman Stifter. She is survived by her sisters, Rosina Suilman and Louise Loebertmann, both of MN; and sisters-in-law, Mae Stifter of MN and Mrs. Clarence Stifter of NJ.

 

Sister received her early education at Holy Trinity Schools in Minnesota and, after entering the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1946, she became a student nurse at Saint Mary's Hospital, Cairo, IL, graduating in 1952. She passed the state board exam for nurses and remained for a year as a staff nurse at the Cairo hospital. Alternating nursing assignments between St. Mary's Hospital/Infirmary, Cairo, IL, and Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, IN, she spent a total of 21 years in Cairo and three years at Saint Mary's convent. In 1973 Sister switched her profession to pastoral care and spent 23 years in hospitals of the Congregation: St. Agnes Hospital, CA, Holy Cross Hospital, UT, Holy Cross Medical Center, CA, and the Wynhoven Heath Care Center, LA.

 

Ill health in 1997 brought Sister Louis to Marian Convent, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN, where she remained active in community affairs and was a member of the Ministry of Prayer until her death.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Reception of the Body will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
