Madge Stoens

August 12, 1912 – May 21, 1989

Madge Stoens, 76, of 23119 Osborne Road, died at 8:45 pm Sunday in St Joseph’s Medical Center.  Mrs. Stoens retired in 1978 from the South Bend Community School Corp. at McKinley School after 30 years of teaching.

She was born August 12, 1912, in Hungary and had lived in South Bend most of her life.  On March 1, 1941, in South Bend, as Madge Varga, she married James T. Stoens, who survives.  Also surviving are a daughter, Patricia Lorenc of South Bend; two grandchildren; a sister, Matilda J. “Tillie” Sappenfield of South Benld; and a brother, Edward L. Varga of South Bend.  She was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Rosary Society of the church, National Education Association, Phi Delta Kappa Sorority and a graduate of Indiana University.

Services will be at 11am Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church.  Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.  Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm Tuesday at Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, where a parish rosary will be recited at 3:30pm.  Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
