Sr. Mary Georgine Strader CSC

Sister Mary Georgine, CSC, (Helen Elizabeth Strader), 73, was born in Danville, Ill., to George M. Strader and Helen Marie Wall Strader.

 

Sister Georgine entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1946 and made profession in 1949. She trained as a teacher and taught grades 2 through 12 over a period of 32 years. She began teaching in Indiana at St. Vincent de Paul, Elkhart, St. Mary's, Anderson and Michigan City, and the Indiana Harbor Catholic School, East Chicago and in Illinois, and St. Theodore's, Chicago, St. Mary's Woodstock, Sacre Coeur, Creve Coeur, and St. Paul's, Danville. Secondary schools included Bishop Noll High, Hammond, and St. Joseph's High, South Bend, where she taught mathematics. In 1981 Sister became a member of the Holy Cross Health System as a technical systems accountant.

 

Sister Georgine moved to Florida in 1987 to be near her elderly parents, and worked in social work at the St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Bon Secours-Maria Manor Nursing Home. For four years she worked at the Martin Luther King Center, Clearwater, Fla., as a tutor in mathematics to underprivileged children. Sister also was a caregiver and pastoral minister at St. Joseph's John Knox Retirement Village, Tampa, Fla.

 

In 1997 Sister retired to Saint Mary's and was active in the ministry of prayer until her sudden and unexpected death. Sister is survived by her brothers, Richard P. and William Strader, both of Florida, and Donald J. and John Strader of Illinois.

 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, Ind. Reception and wake services will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in the Church of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
